Your Ticket to Riding Together with Your Big Dog

The K9 Moto Cockpit is a sturdy, safe, and lightweight carrier for riding together safely with your medium or large dog as pillion. It has a sleek, streamlined, and does put unnecessary strain on your motorcycle’s chassis. So, it means there’s no more deciding whether to ride or hang with your furry pal – and no more wrestling against the idea of a sidecar or trailer.

How We Custom Build Your K9 Moto Cockpit

① Pre-Build

We work together so that you can provide the photos and measurements we need. Then we prepare the mounting plan. Once we have collectively approved the mounting plan, the build begins!

② The Build

We begin by bending and welding the tubular frame. Next, we place the baseplates, screw holes, and any mounting components. Lastly, we weld the anchor ring for harnessing your dog and any additional gear.

③ Painting and Upholstery

Your custom K9 Moto Cockpit is polished and painted with a matte black anticorrosive automotive paint. Next, our upholsterer attach cushions to the frame and then covers it with vinyl and stitching in your color choice.

Feather the Clutch Through the Details Together

Most motorcycle dog carriers for medium and large dogs have three considerable drawbacks:

They are heavy, ugly, and ruin your bike’s performance.

Here’s how the K9 Moto Cockpit is different and how we perform your custom build remotely.

The Design Principle

We designed the K9 Moto Cockpit around one simple, elegant principle that solves the problems of other carriers:

It’s the carrier that doesn’t carry her.

What that means is that the front portion of the Cockpit doesn’t have a solid platform. Instead, the dog’s heaviest bulk – the head and torso – lays directly on the passenger seat through a soft cushion. Only the rear portion of the Cockpit – the portion that extends from the rear of the motorcycle and supports the dog’s lighter half – has a baseplate.

As a result, the Cockpit surrounds and protects your dog everywhere they’re exposed but only directly carries their weight where it’s necessary. So, really, it’s fairer to say that the K9 Moto Cockpit is the carrier that only partially carries her.

The benefits of this design make all the difference:

  1. Less frame and platform make it lightweight and place less strain on the motorcycle’s chassis.
  2. The carrier is smaller and mounts lower to preserve your bike’s sleek lines and appearance.
  3. Because it’s lightweight and mounts lower, it has far less impact on your bike’s natural ride dynamics.

What You Need to Know About K9 Rider Safety

Your dog lays down facing forward on the Cockpit and you strap them in at the front of the harness and at the rear. Harnesses and strapping in is a whole topic in itself, so visit our Cockpit Harness page for all the information you need and to get our custom Cockpit Riding Harness.

Make sure you get a good pair of goggles for your dog to wear while riding, especially at speed. We highly recommend Rex Specs for avoiding those awful yellow eye snots (video).

During the ride, your dog feels partly like a passenger and partly like a duffle bag. This is ideal because passenger and luggage are two load types that most motorcycles were designed to accommodate and that most motorcyclists are accustomed to riding with.

When riding at speed you will hardly notice when your dog whips their head across to enjoy the musty, glorious scent from a field of cows. At slow speeds and when stopped at lights is when you’ll notice your dog shift each time a passer-by whistles to get their attention before snapping a photo (video).

We recommend riding with hard panniers or wide soft cases. That’s because, in case of a crash or tip-over, side cases will keep your dog far from the ground and unharmed.

Customizing the Cockpit for Your Motorcycle

The standard Cockpit design works for a wide variety of ADV, cruiser, and tourer-style motorcycles. Some have even mounted it to 200cc dirt bikes. In only a few cases has it been necessary to make modifications to the Cockpit design to accommodate a specific motorcycle. Otherwise, mounting is where customization comes in.

Most motorcycles feature a luggage platform just to the rear of the passenger seat where there are usual several screws into the frame. We work with you to provide us the photos and measurements that we need to:

  1. Position the Cockpit as far forward as possible without interfering with you the rider (and leaving some paw space for your dog).
  2. Create the appropriate pattern of screw holes for mounting the Cockpit’s baseplate to your luggage platform.

In addition to mounting the baseplate to the luggage platform, we recommend securing the Cockpit to the passenger peg bars or pannier rack. To do this, we include sturdy O-rings at the front corners of the Cockpit. This allows you to run 1-inch polypropylene webbing to your passenger peg bars or to the pannier rack.

Here are the steps we take to build your custom Cockpit.

  1. We create a page for your build project here at goruffly.com and it provides simple instructions with the photos we need of your bike.
  2. You take the photos and upload them to your project page.
  3. We provide a Measurements Worksheet based on two or three of your photos.
  4. You provide the measurements. If you have any doubts, we work through it together on a video call.
  5. We create a diagram based on your measurements.
  6. You double-check the measurements. It’s not unusual for a little back and forth to ensure we get the measurements just right!
  7. You choose the vinyl color, texture, and stitching for your custom Cockpit’s upholstery.
  8. We begin your build, providing you photos throughout the process.
  9. We ship your custom Cockpit by DHL.

How and Where We Build Your Cockpit

We build your custom K9 Moto Cockpit at our partner metal shop near RUFFLY’s Guatemala headquarters in Panajachel along the shores of stunning Lake Atitlan (map).

Our expert craftsman creates the tubular frame by heat-bending and welding ¾-inch iron bars to create smooth, angle-free curves and joints. He builds the partial bottom rear platform from sturdy 3-inch-wide iron plates. Then, he covers the metal frame with black, anticorrosive automotive paint for a smooth, rust-free finish that looks like the crash bars or pannier rack that you would buy from any quality aftermarket manufacturer.

Next, the painted frame goes to our partner upholsterer where they wrap the bars with foam padding covered in outdoor vinyl. We line the vinyl exterior with 1-inch reflective ribbon to enhance the streamlined appearance and improve nighttime safety. Additionally, the upholsterer creates a lightweight, removable 3-inch-thick seat cushion that matches the Cockpit’s footprint. Incidentally, the cushion works great at the campsite, or you might consider our water-resistant TenderPaw TREKKER Bedroll.

The complete build and upholstering usually takes 8-10 weeks and DHL shipping takes another week.

You Ride Together

Once you receive your custom Cockpit, there’s only a couple steps before you’re completely ready to ride.

  1. You’ll probably need to replace the OEM screws in your motorcycle’s luggage platform with ones that are approximately 1 inch longer.
  2. The polypropylene webbing you need for securing the Cockpit’s front O-rings to the passenger peg bars can easily be bought from REI, Strapworks, or through a variety of vendors on Amazon.
  3. We recommend using two pairs of the Commuter size Rok Straps to secure your dog’s harness to the Cockpit. The Rok Straps are very solid but provide just enough stretch to allow your dog to shift, stretch, and lay comfortably.

And again, don’t forget eye protection!

Teaching your dog to leap up to the Cockpit, lay down, and ride is the last step. For most dogs, K9 rider training (free how-to) takes much less time than you’d expect. In the case of our German Shepherd, Moxie, it took about four hours over a weekend before we were riding.

After the first couple rides, the process of riding with your dog – leap up, lay down, strap in  becomes totally natural, adds only a couple minutes to ride prep, and makes riding without your dog feel rather lackluster.
