That Time Whimsy Was Attacked by Angry, Treacherous Donkeys

My first ‘postcard from the road’ is about the time that Whimsy was attacked by a pack of angry, treacherous donkeys.

You might scoff at the thought of a donkey attack. I mean donkeys aren’t lions or tigers or bears.

But, what these donkeys lacked in fangs and claws, they made up for in cunning and strategy. Here’s how it went.

We spent the night camped in a deserted gravel pit off a country road in Guerrero state, Mexico. The next morning, Whimsy wandered while Greg prepared coffee and I packed away the Therma-rests, sleeping bags, and pillows.

“There’s a donkey,” Greg announced over the roar of the camping stove.

As tail-wagging Whimsy advanced, the shy donkey retreated into the thicket. Whimsy followed.

A few moments later, Whimsy emerged at a trot with second donkey close at her heels. She veered to one side but was startled to discover a third donkey appear right in front of her.

She reeled to other side where, you guessed it, a mother-lovin’ fourth donkey flanked her.

Now she was in full retreat, which meant a beeline for our tent and motorcycles.

The mama donkey followed right behind like a charging bull, and she nearly trampled the tent and cooking supplies before finally turning aside.

So, what’s the tip or lesson we learned from this?

Donkeys fight dirty and always in packs!
