Moxie Thumper, a 2013 BMW G650GS, leaked oil all through the first weeks of GoRUFFLY Around the World.
Arriving in Mexico City, this was the moment to solve the problem since we would be stopped for a few days to visit a Girl Up club.
We were still waiting on a replacement part when the day before the Girl Up visit arrived. So, the BMW patched the leak as best they could and I rode off just as they closed shop for the weekend.
Not half a mile from the dealership, the patch failed and steaming oil gushed down the side of the engine housing.

We were in the mad rush of Mexico City traffic, so I pulled off at the first opportunity.
There beside the convenience store, we spied a small group of bikers milling around their bikes.
After speaking with them briefly, Greg trudged back and we began pushing my bike over to join the group.
“That Harley won’t start and they’ve been waiting for a tow truck for two hours,” he explained. “They invited us to wait with them and they offered the first tow when it arrives.”
They were several members of a local biker club and after introductions, they thrust paper cups into our hands and poured from a half-empty bottle of mezcal.
My riding for the day was done but Greg’s wasn’t.
So, I poured his cup into mine and celebrated how our new biker pals had turned lemons into mezcal!
